Sorry for the wasted bandwidth, but I found the problem myself. My
DISPLAY environment variable wasn't accepted somehow.
I used to have it set to :0.0 (as I said it works with the startx
script)
For xdm I had to set it to 'atze:0'
Does anyone know why this has to be this way?
